Types of pathologies

Optic Neuritis

It is an inflammation of the optic nerve that produces decreased vision, eye pain and altered perception of colors. The cause of the inflammation should be studied with clinical and laboratory tests. Sometimes optic neuritis is related to demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system such as Multiple Sclerosis.

Ischemic Optic Neuropathy

It is an injury caused by an alteration in the circulation of the optic nerve that momentarily decreases the arrival of blood and therefore oxygen to this structure. It produces a sudden decrease in vision and is not accompanied by eye pain. It is common in people over 50 years of age or people with risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, changes in cholesterol and triglycerides, or smokers.

Frequent symptoms

  • Decreased vision.
  • Alterations in the visual field (a shadow can be seen).
  • Temporary vision loss.
  • Double vision (diplopia).
  • Drooping of the eyelids (palpebral ptosis).
  • Frequent involuntary blinking or twitching of the eyelids.
  • Alterations in the size of the pupils.
  • Eye pain.
  • Headache with vision of spots or lights.

Diagnostic Tests

The most frequently used diagnostic tests in the evaluation of patients with neuro-ophthalmological pathology are:

  1. Automated perimetry or visual fields.
  2. Brain MRI.
  3. CT scan of the brain and orbits.
  4. optic nerve photographs.
  5. Visual evoked potentials.
  6. Laboratory exams.

Optical coherence tomography is useful in some patients.
